Rita and Phil, 1993

2 Feb

Good morning! Can you believe this weather we’ve been having? But that’s nothing. You know, out in California, they’re gonna have some warm weather tomorrow, gang wars, and some *very* overpriced real estate. Up in the Pacific Northwest, as you can see, they’re gonna have some very, very tall trees.

Yes, today’s couple is, of course, Rita and Phil from Groundhog Day. Happy February 2nd everyone! Let’s get to it:

Couple: Rita and Phil, Groundhog Day

Why they’re great together: They balance each other out, and play off each other beautifully. When Phil says that he’s been stabbed, shot, frozen, hung, electrocuted and burned, and wakes up every morning “without a dent in the fender” Rita is skeptical, but you can see her concern underneath, too. Phil doesn’t come off as completely crazy, because you can sense the producer in Rita thinking, “Hmmm…what’s this guy’s story?” And Rita doesn’t come off a a complete workaholic, because later on in the movie, Phil helps her to relax, and have fun.

Best moment/quote: Full disclosure: I have a deep and undying love for Bill Murray, so my favourite quote is pretty much everything he says, which is pretty much this entire movie. But I especially love his dry way of commenting on things, especially in the first half of the film when he’s using his new-found status as “a god – not *the* god, but *a* god…I think.” for his own nefarious purposes. You can practically see the wheels turning in his head in this scene, with hilarious results:

They’re your perfect couple if: You’re willing to change for your partner. Or move to Punxsutawney.

I’ll see you back here tomorrow as we continue our countdown. Have a wonderful Thursday everyone!

I’ll see you back here tomorrow as we… kidding! Just kidding!!

ps) wouldn’t it be great if we all had two, three or more chances to get to say EXACTLY the right thing at the right time to the right person.
